Hat Trick of British Champions for Stockton Wrestling Club
Stockton wrestling club, the 20012 Evening Gazette Junior team of the year continued there fantastic year by excelling at the recent Junior British Wrestling Championships held in Glasgow, coming away with three new British Champions.
Marcus Sudron, 19 from Billingham, a member of the Tees Active Sports Academy and a plumbing apprentice for Elite Building Services, added to his past Championship medals and led the team by example, taking Gold in the 74 Kilo category. Marcus dug deep to overcome an injury early in the competition to come out on top in a very strong group.
James Wheeler from Eaglescliffe, 11 who attends Egglescliffe Comprehensive School, continued his perfect run of performances this year by adding the Junior British Championship at 45 Kilos to the British Novice Championship he won earlier in the year. James is unbeaten this year at home and abroad and has won every match of every competition he has entered by pin, this was his first shot at the British title.
Taylor Smith, 9 from Billingham, did amazingly well adding the British Title in the 26 Kilo category after less than a year wrestling, to the Derbyshire Open title he won earlier in the year. Taylor is a great addition to the club and is making great improvements week on week.
Kieron and Owen Sudron both got Silver Medals and Max Ashton did very well in a tough group to take Bronze.
Jack O'Rourke, Ben Hamilton, Billy Steel and Daniel Hutchinson all performed admirably in their first Championships.
Head Coach, Mick Sudron, was delighted with the team’s performance saying, "We have a very young team of relatively inexperienced wrestlers here at Stockton as we are currently building the numbers at the club. For us to go to the biggest competition in the country and come away with such an array of medals is fantastic and is a great example to the rest of our young squad of what can be achieved with hard work and perseverance. We are looking to grow the club and would welcome new members to the club."
